A Formula for Disaster/Fun

Ingredients:
Swanky venue (Cipriani's Wall St.)
Fantastic outfit
Alcohol
Law students

Start off with one hot vintage Dolce & Gabbana dress, add 5-inch red shoes, throw in liberal amounts of alcohol, shake and see what happens.

What you get is actually the law school semi-formal where anything and everything is possible and people do things they'd rather forget about the next day. Myself included. After about 10 glasses of champagne, 2 vodka tonics, and 2 beers it's no surprise that I managed to twist my ankle (it is now swollen) AND get kicked out of a cab in Brooklyn (still have no idea how we ended up there) AND do a few other things that are too scandalous to write about (well, not really but I'd rather not write about it). Yup, it was a good night ;-)

What will next year bring?

Hmmm

I want a grande non-fat latte. Extra hot. Starbucks, bien sur.

Also, I'll be heading up to Boston for the weekend. It's sure to be a shitshow.

Back to School Cool

Ah, back to school is one of my favorite times of the year. There's something about buying new school supplies (pens, legal pads, mini staplers, and highliters are a must) that just gets me in the mood for studying. And in the mood for some new fall clothes :-)

I'm really such a dork because I always picture myself in some jeans and a cute blazer and scarf studying in a cafe or under some rusty-colored trees on campus. Of course this never happens. By the time the foliage achieves its perfect orange-y red color it's already too cold and windy to be sitting under any trees. I'm fairly convinced that such a tableau only happens on Gilmore Girls.

In any case, I'm much more of an urban girl so the idyllic collegiate setting does not suit me so well. Hence, the cafe scenario works out much better for me (and I usually get free internet- for all those Westlaw searches of course).
But before I'll be cracking open Massey's American Constitutional Law (3rd edition) with a nice cup of coffee at Think I made some mental notes of my latest fashion obsessions.

Motorcycle boots- I don't own any right now but that will be fixed shortly. I plan on wearing them with absolutely everything from skinny jeans to minis with tights.

Zippers- Urban Outfitters has some amazing exposed zipper dresses. Love!

Plaid- still going strong. I'd like to get a really fitted plum plaid shirt to pair with some skinny jeans and lace camisole.

Statement jewelry- I bought 2 amazing rings from H&M ($5 each) and a necklace from Nordstrom ($10). What I love about big jewelry is that it instantly adds interest to an outfit and dresses up even the most basic t-shirt. And speaking of t-shirts...

Slouchy low cut t-shirts- they're quickly becoming a staple in my wardrobe.

High-waisted skirts- either tight or flouncy. They're perfect for tucking and make legs look really really long (as if I need extra help in that department)

And finally...

Long fitted blazers- I have one that I got from my mom. It's Armani from the 90's and it's still perfect!

Ask Chemskank Revisited

About a year and a half ago I posted Ask Chemskank which was a list of random "advice" I tried to live by.

I can say that #3, #15, and #18 were a huge FAIL (edit on #18- it's ok, sometimes, but only when I do it.) Whatever, I'm still pretty...and angsty. Pretty angsty. What a great combination. Some things never change.

Tweet Tweet

There's this new website thing some of you kids may have heard about...it's called Twitter. It's simple enough: you post comments less than 140 characters in length. You can even include tiny links (cute!) The problem with it is that, if you give it a chance, it becomes more addictive than crystal meth!! You can post things from pretty much anywhere. So say you're out in a crowded bar on Saturday night, you can tweet from there: "Wow, these people are really annoying. Please stop touching me!!"

Much like a drunken text message, you can also end up posting things that you may later regret except this time it's not aimed at one person (though it actually is) and within seconds it's for the world to see... embarrassment ensues. It's like a walk of shame, in HTML format.

My other problem is that somehow all these fucking weirdos find me and start "following" me (because that's what you do on Twitter...cyberstalking lite). I seriously don't know how they do it but I don't know them and I'm not interested. Hope the Twitter team gets this spamming issue under control soon.

But overall, it's quite entertaining and fun. But if you join, please don't follow me!

Lucky Answers All The Questions You Didn't Ask

Leave it to Lucky magazine to state the obvious. Today they give us "the perfect" beach cover up.
It's a sarong. How novel. It actually doesn't even go with any of the bikinis I own! Something in a solid color would have been a much better choice
. On the upside, it costs only 35 bucks. Not too bad.

Who are these people working at Lucky?

Fashion's Search for Authenticity

“Fashion magazines are always about some element of fantasy,” said Cindi Leive, the editor of Glamour, “but what I’m hearing from readers lately is that in fashion, as in every other part of our lives right now, there is a hunger for authenticity. Artifice, in general, feels very five years ago.”

This actually brings up the question whether fashion is inherently inauthentic. Fashion takes its inspiration from authentic things like an African print and transforms it into something that’s manufactured, manipulated, and artificial. I think that the fashion industry should stop trying to create “authenticity” when it relentlessly pushes trends onto consumers. That’s the antithesis of “real”.

Personal style is authentic, fashion is not.

I don't know...I'm rambling. Haha

Wish List

Now that the shopping embargo has been lifted, I can finally indulge in some shopping (and have). I recently bought a pair of great earrings from Banana Republic (ON SALE...30% off). But I figure that making a list of items would help me keep focus and keep spending somewhat in check.
Here are some things I want to get my hands on:

1. A new pair of flat sandals
2. One or two great maxi dresses (ideally, one solid and a print)
3. White jeans (bootcut or skinny)...err, this could be a disaster
4. Vibrant tops
5. Summer clutch
6. A jumpsuit. This too could go seriously wrong.

Day 23- 1 Week Left!

This is exiting! I'm on day 23 of no shopping. The weekend was tough because I kept going in and out of stores, trying stuff on. I almost ALMOST bought a pair of earrings from Forever 21 just for the hell of it but changed my mind. If I were to break the rule it would have to be over something better, not a pair of cheap earrings. You know, if you're gonna be bad, you better do it right.

In other news, I started posting outfits on Fabsugar.com and got selected for "Look of the Day." It's sortof a hobby to replace shopping. It also completely feeds into my sense of vanity. All the positive re-enforcement only makes me want to keep posting. Aye aye aye.

Shopping My Own Closet

Haven't worn these jeans that often...they're light so they're not too appropriate for winter. But today was a good day to wear them. I like the pairing with the light gray cardi and white tank. I couldn't resist adding some black though. This blazer doesn't get much wear since it's part of a suit but I might take it out more often from now on.

So I'm on day....um, 18. Damn. I think that's the longest I haven't shopped in many many many years. I feel pretty good actually. I miss shopping though...but I realized that I don't NEED it. My life is perfectly fine and fulfilling without it. It's kindof liberating!

Day 9

Over the weekend I entered into a contest for "best stripes look" solely because the prize was a 50 dollar giftcard to Forever 21. That would not qualify as shopping because I wouldn't be spending my own money. It's a GIFT! Sadly, my plans were thwarted as I didn't win :-(
But I should have...seriously, the winner was lame. This was my entry:

Day 7 and 200th Post!

YES! I made it through a week without any purchases. I almost slipped on Thursday because I was having a really depressing day and needed some retail therapy but thankfully I didn't see anything I really liked at Macy's.

Today was tough too since I went store hopping with a friend (the weather was amazing!) Zara, you temptress, stop having such amazing clothes! Definitely hoping that by April 1st there are going to be some amazing sales so I can go a little crazy :-)

Day 4

Luckily, for the past several days (5, to be exact) I've been to busy writing an appellate brief for my legal writing class to even consider doing anything else. FML. So far so good. I have been wondering though...
1. Is using mom's Macy's card shopping? YES, I'm having a hard time trying to justify this one.
2. What if I would not so subtly insinuate that I would LIKE a particular item and in light of my predicament someone should buy it for me? Gifts are not shopping.... Of course, I'm not even suggesting that I would stoop to such a low level. Not yet.

No Shopping Day 2

Easy peasy...NYC got pummeled by a major snowstorm overnight, making it difficult to even get out of the apartment. So no shopping for me- great success!

Confessions of a Shopaholic

I've decided to give up shopping for the ENTIRE month of March!! I kick myself now, I should have chosen February (3 days shorter). I don't do Lent but I thought this would be an interesting experiment...I like testing my willpower. Oh and it WILL test my willpower. Just like my mom, I hear the siren song of shopping on a daily basis. It's hard for me to walk into a store and not find something that I like and it's also hard for me to not walk into the store in the first place. So for the next 31...30 days there will be no more purchasing of clothes, shoes, or accessories :-(

As far as I can tell, this little experiment will have additional benefits. Since I won't be spending so much money on clothes anymore I am free to re-distribute the saved cash to other parts of my budget (let's assume that said budget actually exists). So now I can spend more dough on other things, such as:

1. Coffee (an extra coffee a day would be nice)
2. FOOD!
3. Booze

I'm also looking forward to thinking outside the sartorial box. I have SO many clothes and the possibilities are limitless but generally if I don't know what to wear, I'll just go out and buy something new. This is going to challenge my imagination and sense of style.

*This is a picture of my closet...It's not really representative of all I own. There's also a dresser full of clothes...clothes stored under my bed, accessories in one of my desk drawers and SHOES! In other words, it's obscene.
I will have periodic updates on this!

Prettiest Song Ever

Latika's Theme from the Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack is the prettiest song ever. I've been listening to it on loop for the past hour or so and I can't help but replay the last scene of the movie over and over in my head...you know, when Latika and Jamal FINALLY get together :-)
Listen to it here:

Spring Break-NYC Style

My "spring" break is less than 2 weeks away. It's going to be a much needed break from the school routine of reading and writing constantly. Since I'm not going anywhere I decided to do my own thing and explore parts of NYC that I've never been to and revisit some old favorites :-)

1. The MoMA and Met
2. Jackson Heights for Indian food (yum)
3. PS1 Contemporary Art Center in LI City, and gallery tour
4. BK Museum of Art
5. Cupcake tour

Any other suggestions??

10 Things That Annoy Me

1. Writing memos for Legal Writing.
2. Researching memos for Legal Writing.
3. The fact that one of my roommates always sets the heat on 65 even though it's freezing.
4. Getting random friend requests on Facebook.
5. Not being able to wear what I want because of the weather.
6. Waking up early for Prof. Parella's 9 AM class.
7. Yellow hi-liters.

10. Killzone 2 (haha!)

That last one's dedicated to a special someone ;-)

Valentine's Day

Now, as you may recall from my last V-Day post, I'm not a huge fan of it. I do, however, love lingerie and around Valentine's Day in particular is when the best of it comes out. Every girl likes feeling cute and lingerie is one of the best ways to achieve that goal. For example, even if I wear the most boring jeans and tshirt, some lacy undies make me feel damn sexy. Here are my pics from Victoria's Secret...

Yes! Garters and stockings...there's nothing sexier and more glamorous in my opinion. I love the mix of satin and mesh. It's like a little game of conceal and reveal.

Black lace is synonymous with seduction ;-)

Oh look, a romper. CUTE! Maybe not a man's idea of sexy. This is more girl sexy. I'd like to think that I would lounge around in it on a Sunday while reading the paper and doing the crossword. What's 3 across?

Pink lace bra. Very romantic.
This has a very playful feel. It's simple but the black bows add a nice touch. Oh yes, let's not forget about the garters :-)

Confession: Valentine's Day is not looking too bad right now.

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Oh the weather outside is frightful...but I'm already looking forward to a new season. Damn season-pushing! The stores are already starting to get their new spring arrivals in and I can't help but feel elated at the sight of soft colors and airy fabrics. Sadly, my wardrobe still consists of heavy coats, scarves, and boots.

I love the print of this dress! LOVE IT! I want it
These shoes are cute and fun. The multi-colored ruffle is a very nice touch. They are begging to be paired with a pretty dress or a flippy skirt. And the best part? They cost under 30 bucks.

I love high heels and fun colors. These are perfection.

Such a pretty top. It's ethereal and girly. It also comes in a dreamy lavender-periwinkle color. I can picture it paired with some skinny jeans a flat sandal, maybe with some fancy chandelier earrings.

Another amazing dress, in a beautiful color. It looks supercomfy.

Domestic Goddess

In my continuous quest for procrastination I baked a cake today. Actually, that was not my intention. I went to the supermarket to buy some hot cocoa mix because it's one of those days when hot chocolate would be perfect (hot chocolate+Property hw+ Jack Bauer= yess!) But alas, product placement...the baking goods aisle is so enticing. I picked up a lemon cake mix and vanilla frosting. Now I'm not one for baking...I figure, why do it yourself when you can buy it? But there's something so satisfying about MAKING something yourself. It kinda just tastes better (even though in reality it might not!)

1 cup water + 1/3 cup oil + 3 eggs+ cake mix+ 350 degree oven +30 minutes = delicious looking golden cake

Verdict? Pretty darn good. The lemon flavor was not too strong, however. I think next time I'm going to add some lemon juice and lemon zest in order to amp up the citrusy taste.

No limbs were lost in the making of this culinary creation.
